I grew up in the ‘60s on the Canadian border, far out of the range of most television broadcasts. As a result, the only three stations we received seemed intent on televising competitive curling, mimed street performances, and a strange array of British children’s programs. One of these stations aired a scary but fascinating show about marionettes trapped in a submarine far beneath the sea. I was terrified by the puppets but fascinated by the “sonar” machine. The mesmerizing radial swoop (visual), and the repetitive blips (audio) were strangely calming. This memory inspired the sharp and soft focus of Sonar.
